HOW TO REMOVE CAT URINE STAINS

What You Need

Cats are family, but that doesn't mean you want your home to smell like one. Few odors are as stubborn as cat urine. Not only is the ammonia-like stench unpleasant, but it can also encourage pets to re-mark the same area if not cleaned properly.

Urine may be mostly water, but the remaining proteins, salts, and uric acid make it especially tough to tackle. As urine dries, bacteria break down urea and release foul-smelling compounds. Uric acid, which binds tightly to surfaces like carpet fibers and mattress padding, is not water-soluble and can linger for years.

DIY remedies—like vinegar, baking soda, or hydrogen peroxide—may temporarily mask odors, but when humidity rises, uric acid can recrystallize and bring the smell back. Ordinary household cleaners often fall short too, leaving behind stains or only covering odors rather than eliminating them.

The most effective solution is an enzyme cleaner with live bacteria that targets the source of the odor. Simple Green® Pet Stain & Odor Remover breaks down and digests urine, feces, vomit, and more. Safe for use on both hard and soft surfaces, it permanently removes stains and odors so your home stays fresh and welcoming.

DIRECTIONS FOR REMOVING CAT URINE STAINS:

To assure color-fastness, spot test on a small area of the surface to be cleaned.

Spot Cleaning

  1. Absorb. Blot and absorb any excess urine with paper towels.
  2. Spray the affected area with Simple Green® Pet Stain & Odor Remover. Saturate the stained area with cleaner and let it sit.
  3. Let dry. Allow the product to remain on the surface until it's dry. Restrict traffic while the area is drying.
  4. Cover heavily stained areas. For heavily soiled areas with a strong odor, saturate the stained area and cover with a clean cloth or paper towel. Allow it to remain like this for 4-5 hrs. You will see the stain absorb up into the towel.
  5. Repeat. If necessary, repeat this process until the stain is gone.

Machine Cleaning

  1. Absorb. Blot and absorb any excess urine with paper towels.
  2. Pre-treat stains or urine spots on carpet with Simple Green® Pet Stain & Odor Remover.
  3. Mix 3 ounces of product per gallon of water of Simple Green in the machine reservoir.
  4. Repeat. If necessary, repeat this process until the stain is gone.
