Safer Choice helps consumers, businesses, and purchasers find products that perform and contain ingredients that are safer for human health and the environment. Safer Choice is an EPA Pollution Prevention (P2) program, which includes practices that reduce, eliminate, or prevent pollution at its source, such as using safer ingredients in products.
When you see the Safer Choice label it means that product has passed the EPA's stringent criteria to earn Safer Choice Certification.
Every Ingredient Is Reviewed. Before a product can carry the Safer Choice label, the EPA's scientific team reviews all chemical ingredients.
Every single ingredient must meet strict safety criteria for both human health and the environment. Products cannot contain any ingredients of concern including carcinogens and reproductive or developmental toxicants. Even dyes and fragrances are screened for safety.
SAFER FOR
Products that qualify for Safer Choice Certification must pass category-specific performance standards as defined in the Safer Choice Standard. All products must work just as well as conventional products.
Safer Choice reviews all product packaging against criteria defined in the Safer Choice Standard. Partners are required to implement sustainable packaging measures and to improve the packaging profile for their recognized products during the partnership.
Labeled products must meet pH standards that minimize the potential for skin and eye irritation or injury.
Safer Choice restricts VOC content to minimize indoor air pollution and associated respiratory concerns.

REQUIREMENTS FOR
PRODUCTS INTENDED
FOR OUTDOOR USE
Certain products intended for use outdoors are likely to bypass sewage treatment, limiting the time for degradation prior to entering sensitive environments. For these products, Safer Choice has raised the bar in its standard environmental criteria to address the potential for immediate contact with aquatic life.
This additional certification means an outdoor product is certified as safer for use outdoors when used as directed.
EPA/Safer Choice recognition does not constitute endorsement of this product. The Safer Choice label signifies that the product's formula, as Sunshine Makers, Inc. has represented it to the EPA, contains ingredients with more positive health and environmental characteristics than conventional products of the same type. EPA/Safer Choice relies solely on Sunshine Makers, Inc., its integrity and good faith, for information on the product's composition, ingredients, and attributes. EPA/Safe Choice has not independently identified, that is, via chemical analysis, the ingredients in the product formula, nor evaluated any of Sunshine Maker Inc.'s non-ingredient claims. EPA/Safer Choice provides its evaluation only as to the product's human health and environmental characteristics, as specified in the Safer Choice Standard and based on currently available information and scientific understanding.
