HOW TO DISINFECT A TRASH CAN

The kitchen trash can and recycling bin are among the most neglected spots when it comes to cleaning, with roughly 400 bacteria per square inch living and breeding on the surface*. Without proper disinfection, you're running a big risk of spreading illness-causing bacteria and pathogens that live in the garbage you throw away, including cold, flu, E. Coli, Salmonella and more.

Bacteria are among the fastest reproducing organisms in the world, doubling every 4-20 minutes! A weekly disinfecting routine is recommended, to stop the spread of disease-causing microorganisms and common illnesses. If you're dealing with a more serious mess like juices from raw meat or used tissues escaping the garbage bag, you'll want to disinfect your trash bin immediately.

People commonly use disinfecting wipes because they seem convenient, but those often require that surfaces remain wet for up to 10 minutes in order to be effective. If your trash can isn't wet for the entire time, those germs can remain alive and able to spread.

Keeping a surface wet with disinfecting wipes can be more difficult than you might think. Many of them contain alcohol, which can cause the liquid to dry quickly. This can make it difficult to keep the surface wet without re-wiping multiple times, resulting in a potential waste of both time and money. Additionally, alcohol can also cause premature cracking of plastic and vinyl, while bleach wipes can cause surface discoloration.

A fast-acting spray-application disinfectant will allow you to disinfect the hard-to-reach areas that wipes can't, and ensures that the surface remains wet for the proper time so germs are, in fact, killed.
