HOW TO CLEAN CURTAINS

What You Need

When's the last time you actually cleaned your curtains? If you can't remember, then it's definitely time.

Did you know you can use Simple Green to pre-treat curtain stains before you toss them in the wash? It's great for getting out those spots, spills and soils laundry detergent alone might not be able to handle. Here's how to get rid of the dirt and stains and bring your curtains back to life.

Tip: When in doubt about a material, always spot test first.

Directions for Cleaning Curtains:

For High-Efficiency (HE) Washing Machines:

  1. Pre-treat stains. Dampen the curtains with water and spray any stains with full-strength Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner. Then, gently scrub the stains with a soft brush to help the solution work into the fabric.
    • Tip: After pre-treating, wash immediately.
  2. Add curtains. Add curtains to the washing machine.
  3. Add laundry detergent. Pour the recommended amount of laundry detergent into the washing machine dispenser.
  4. Start the washer. Read and follow instructions on the care label and select the appropriate washing machine settings for the curtains. Begin the wash cycle.
  5. Dry. Once the wash cycle has been completed, read and follow the drying instructions on the care label. If the label is missing or unclear, air dry for best results or use the lowest heat setting on the dryer.

For Conventional Washing Machines:

  1. Pre-treat stains. Dampen the curtains with water and spray any stains with full-strength Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner. Then, gently scrub the stains with a soft brush to help the solution work into the fabric.
    • Tip: After pre-treating, wash immediately.
  2. Start the washer. Turn on the washer and allow the drum to fill with water.
  3. Add laundry detergent. Once the washer has filled with enough water to cover the bottom of the drum, add the recommended amount of detergent according to the care label or the detergent bottle.
  4. Add Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner. Add ¼ cup of Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner to the water in the drum. For large loads or heavily soiled curtains (such as smoke-exposed or grease-covered fabrics), use ½ cup and allow the curtains to soak for 30-60 minutes prior to starting the wash cycle.
  5. Add curtains. Add the curtains to the water-filled drum and begin the wash cycle.
  6. Dry. Once the wash cycle has been completed, read and follow the drying instructions on the label of the curtains. If the label is missing or unclear, air dry for best results or use the lowest heat setting on the dryer.
