HOW TO CLEAN A TOILET
- Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner
- Damp microfiber or non-abrasive cloth
- Old toothbrush (for hinges and tight spots)
- Pumice stone (for stubborn waterline rings)
- Toilet brush
Despite how often we use it, cleaning a toilet isn't a fun task. But a dirty toilet doesn't just look bad — it can also stink up your entire bathroom.
Many bathroom cleaning products contain bleach and other chemicals that can irritate or damage your eyes, while others like trisodium phosphate (TSP) and borax require protective rubber gloves, goggles, and a mask to use safely. It's best to avoid in-tank toilet cleaning tablets or disks, as these can degrade rubber and plastic components inside the tank, like the flapper and other seals, over time. Skip wire brushes too, since they'll scratch the surface of your toilet, making it harder to clean in the future.
Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner makes this unpleasant chore easier, without the harsh chemicals found in other products. It also deodorizes, so you can remove stubborn stains and leave your bathroom smelling clean and fresh at the same time.
Deep clean the bowl and exterior once a week, and swish the toilet brush around the bowl daily to help maintain cleanliness between deep cleans.
Keep in mind Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner does not eliminate germs. For that, a fast-acting spray-application disinfectant can kill cold, flu, E. coli, Salmonella, Staph, and other illness-causing bacteria in 2 minutes or less. Click here to learn more about disinfecting your toilet.
Directions for Cleaning a Toilet:
- Remove lid covers or fresheners. Take off any lid covers or toilet-bowl fresheners before you begin.
- Wet. Flush the toilet to wet the inside of the bowl.
- Apply Simple Green. Spray full-strength Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner all around the bowl, making sure to get it under the rim.
- Soak. Let the cleaner sit and coat the walls of the bowl for about 5 minutes.
- Spray exterior. While the bowl soaks, flip the lid and seat down and spray the outside of the toilet with water, then with full-strength Simple Green.
- Wipe lids. Spray Simple Green on a damp cloth or sponge and wipe down both sides of the lid and seat. Use an old toothbrush to scrub close to the hinges, and don't forget the underside of the seat.
- Wipe down toilet. Wipe the rest of the exterior top to bottom with a damp microfiber or non-abrasive cloth, including the handle and base.
- Dry. Dry with a clean cloth or paper towels.
- Clean the bowl. Scrub the bowl with a toilet brush to remove stains and mineral deposits. Dip the brush back into the bowl water occasionally for extra scrubbing power, since the Simple Green from the soak is still active there. A stubborn ring at the waterline can be scrubbed away with a pumice stone.
- Flush. Once you've thoroughly scrubbed, close the lid and flush away the residue.
