HOW TO CLEAN A CAR COVER
Car covers are an essential layer of protection for vehicles that are stored for extended periods of time, especially classic or luxury cars that are seldom used. Car covers help protect your vehicle from dust, dirt, and moisture that can damage the surface of your car or dull the finish.
However, because car covers are exposed to debris, they require proper care to be effective. Cleaning your car cover every few months helps maintain its protective qualities and extends its lifespan.
Avoid household cleaners that contain bleach, ammonia, alcohol, vinegar, or other harsh chemicals. These ingredients can weaken the fabric and reduce the cover's effectiveness. Abrasive cleaning tools like stiff brushes should also be avoided, as they can damage the material.
Use a non-abrasive cleaner that effectively removes dirt without harming the fabric. Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner removes dust, grime, and residue without weakening or discoloring fabrics. It meets the EPA's Safer Choice Standard and works well on car covers.
Directions for Cleaning a Car Cover
Tip: Always read and follow label instructions and spot test in a small, hidden area before full application to ensure surface compatibility.
- Remove cover. Take the car cover off the vehicle and shake it out on concrete or grass to remove loose dust and debris.
- Rinse. Lay the cover flat on a clean driveway, patio, or large surface and thoroughly rinse with cold water from a garden hose to remove surface dirt. Use light water pressure. Avoid pressure washers, as they can damage the fabric.
- Pre-treat stains. Spray stains with full-strength Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner, then gently scrub them with a soft brush or microfiber cloth to help the solution work into the fabric.
- Dilute. Dilute Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner with water at a ratio of 1:10 (1 part cleaner to 10 parts water) in a dilution bottle or empty spray bottle.
- Apply solution. Apply the diluted Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner across the entire cover in sections.
- Gently scrub. Using a soft brush, sponge, or microfiber cloth, wipe the entire surface of the car cover, working in sections to lift and remove dirt.
- Rinse again. Using the garden hose, rinse the cover thoroughly with cold water.
- Air dry. Hang or lay flat to dry before using. Avoid direct sunlight and heat, as it can damage and shrink the material.
