HOW TO CLEAN ELECTRIC STOVE TOP

What You Need

  • Paper towels or newspaper
  • Non-metallic brush
  • Plastic cooktop scraper

A clean stove top both sets the tone for a beautiful kitchen and helps to maintain your and your family's health. Bacteria can build up in the burnt chunks of food that never made it into your meals and lead to illness. Also, burning sauces and grease onto your stovetop can damage the finish.

Electric stoves can either have metal coil burners or glass tops. While coiled burners of most electric stovetops are designed to be self-cleaning and glass is usually simple to clean, some spills and messes can require a more thorough cleanup.

Regardless of which type of burner you have in your kitchen, natural cleaning options, including white vinegar, dish soap, and a sprinkle of baking soda, may not be strong enough degreasers. Although it may seem like a common sense solution for a glass cooktop, glass cleaning products can leave behind a chemical residue that could be either flammable or harmful to inhale as it burns off.

Whether you have metal coil burners or a glass topped stove, Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner breaks down grease and can deep clean your burnt electric stove top without harsh or abrasive chemicals. Plus, it won't leave behind fumes that can linger long after you've finished cleaning.

To make things even easier on yourself in the future, it's best to clean electric stove top burners weekly. Food and grease won't have a chance to get stuck or cause damage if you get rid of those spots as soon as they show up.

Directions for Cleaning an Electric Stove Top:

Check your owners manual and warranty before beginning.

Cleaning Coil Burner Electric Stove Tops

  1. Remove the burners and drip pans, if possible. Make sure the burners are completely cool before removing them. Carefully pull them in the opposite direction of their connection to the stove, and lift. Check to see if your burners have additional fasteners holding them in place before removing.
  2. Soak drip pans.
    • Plug your sink drain and place your drip pans in the sink.
    • Fill the basin with warm water and 2 cups of Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner.
    • Leave the pieces to soak for 10 to 15 minutes (while you clean the rest of the stove).
    • If necessary, scrub the pans with a non-abrasive scrubbing pad.
    • Make sure you dry all pieces thoroughly with a dry cloth.
  3. Clean coils.
    • Lay coils flat on a couple of paper towels or a few sheets of newspaper.
    • Spray them thoroughly with water, then with full strength Simple Green.
    • Scrub with a non-metallic, medium-bristle brush or non-abrasive scrubbing pad to loosen caked-on food residue.
    • Finish by wiping each burner down with a damp cloth then drying with a dry cloth. Make sure the connector prongs are dry.
  4. Clean your stove top.
    • Wipe first with a damp microfiber pad or non-abrasive cloth.
    • Spray full strength Simple Green onto a clean, damp microfiber pad or non-abrasive cloth. Wipe down the stove top and allow the product to soak for a minute or two. Do not spray your Simple Green directly onto the surface because you might wet the burner sockets.
    • Scrub, if necessary. Use your non-metallic, medium-bristle brush or scrubbing pad. For extra heavy buildup, you may need a cooktop scraper. These are usually made of a hard plastic, which will prevent scratches to your stovetop.
    • Rinse by wiping with a damp microfiber pad or non-abrasive cloth to ensure a residue free surface.
    • Dry the surface using a clean microfiber pad or non-abrasive cloth.
  5. Reinstall burners. After double-checking that all pieces are completely dry, replace the drip pans and carefully plug the burners back into their sockets. Be careful not to bend the prongs.

Cleaning Glass Electric Stove Tops

  1. Remove crumbs. Wipe first with a dry cloth to collect dust and crumbs.
  2. Dilute your Simple Green. Mix 1 teaspoon of Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner with 2 cups of water in an empty spray bottle.
  3. Spray the surface with your Simple Green solution.
  4. Remove stuck-on gunk, if necessary. Use a plastic cooktop scraper to scrape away any gunk. It's best to do this while the surface is still damp.
  5. Wipe clean. Use a clean, damp microfiber or other lint-free cloth or towel.
  6. Dry. Buff dry with a clean, dry cloth, microfiber pad or paper towel.
